RoBFMS (Robots to Inspect, Maintain and Repair in Extreme and Challenging Environments)
Biofouling, the build-up of marine organisms on submerged structures, is a significant challenge for the marine energy sector. It can reduce the efficiency of energy-generating devices, increase maintenance requirements and accelerate corrosion, impacting both performance and asset lifespan. Traditional inspection and cleaning methods can be costly, time-consuming and may require personnel to work in challenging offshore environments.
To address this, Innovative Technology & Science Ltd (InnoTecUK), in partnership with EMEC and Brunel University London, developed the RoBFMS (Robots to Inspect, Maintain and Repair in Extreme and Challenging Environments) system. The robotic platform combines sensors, navigation systems and cameras to monitor subsea structures, identify biofouling and detect defects. It also incorporates a high-power ultrasonic cleaning system capable of removing marine growth without the need for direct human intervention.
The project demonstrated the potential of robotic inspection and maintenance technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of offshore operations. By automating the detection and removal of biofouling, the system offers a practical way to reduce maintenance costs, improve asset performance and minimise offshore personnel exposure. The technology also has potential applications across a wide range of marine industries beyond renewable energy.
