Leask Marine Case Study – The Raptor Submersible Drilling Rig Project

Leask Marine

The Raptor Submersible Drilling Rig Project

Leask Marine supported Minesto’s tidal energy project in the Faroe Islands, where the need for reliable, locally generated renewable energy is driving the transition away from imported fossil fuels. To enable the deployment of Minesto’s tidal kite system, a robust subsea foundation was required at a site characterised by strong currents and challenging seabed conditions that exceeded the capabilities of conventional installation methods.

To address this challenge, Leask Marine designed, fabricated and installed a single steel monopile foundation drilled and grouted into the seabed. The project included full project management, FEED and detailed design, in-house fabrication with third-party verification, and offshore installation using a Leask Marine multicat vessel and the Raptor SDR autonomous subsea drilling rig.

The successful installation enabled continuous tidal energy operations at the site, supporting the Faroe Islands’ move towards low-carbon, locally generated power. The project also demonstrated the effectiveness of the Raptor SDR in delivering precise and reliable foundation installation in demanding offshore environments, reducing offshore risk, vessel time and overall deployment costs.
